RV travel can be a comfortable way to include a pet in a family trip, but “pet-friendly” does not mean every animal, RV, or campground is automatically approved. Confirm the rental and destination policies before booking either one.
Ask about the RV pet policy
Policies may limit species, number of pets, size, breed, or unattended animals. A pet fee or additional cleaning charge may apply. Share accurate information with the rental provider; an undisclosed pet can violate the agreement and create problems during or after the trip.
Check the campground separately
A pet-friendly RV does not guarantee a pet-friendly campsite. Campgrounds may require vaccination records, leashes, designated walking areas, or limits on certain animals. Some trails, beaches, buildings, and event areas may prohibit pets even when the campground allows them.
Prepare the RV
Bring familiar bedding, food, bowls, medications, waste bags, a leash, identification, and cleaning supplies. Protect upholstery and floors as permitted. Know where the pet will rest without blocking exits or access to RV controls.
Manage temperature carefully
RV climate systems depend on power, fuel, equipment condition, and campground service. Never assume an RV will remain safe for an unattended pet. Weather and power can change quickly. Plan activities that include the pet or arrange appropriate care.
Make travel safer
Pets should be secured appropriately during vehicle movement and should never roam inside a moving RV. Schedule water and exercise breaks, and watch for stress, motion sickness, hot surfaces, wildlife, and unfamiliar surroundings.
Practice good campground etiquette
Use a leash where required, control barking, clean up promptly, and respect neighboring campsites. Do not attach a pet to RV equipment or allow it near hookups, hot components, roads, or other guests without supervision.
Plan for emergencies
Save veterinary information for the destination and carry health records when appropriate. Make sure identification and microchip contacts are current. A recent photo can help if a pet becomes lost.
With early planning and honest communication, an RV trip can give pets and their people more room to settle into the journey together.
